City’s Energy teams reach new heights

The City’s Energy Directorate has taken its operations to new heights with the acquisition of a new fleet of 37 vehicles for the 2025/26 financial year. Among these are two state-of-the-art Aerial Platform Trucks intended to enhance the reliability and efficiency of electricity provision to residents. The City has budgeted R63,6 million for the new fleet, ensuring the City continues to meet the growing needs of Cape Town’s residents.
‘These are replacement vehicles with upgraded functionality not seen in our previous fleet. The new vehicles will be deployed across the metro, strengthening our capacity to respond swiftly to service requests and deliver on our routine maintenance activities. This is just one of a series of investments we’re making to maintain the reliability and efficiency of our electricity distribution network. These trucks will help teams on the ground fix and install more streetlights, maintain overhead electrical equipment, including cables and transformers, and respond to complex electrical work.

The new aerial platform trucks offer several unique advantages for safety and efficiency:
- All outriggers can be deployed with a single lever, with an auto-stabilising function
- Telescopic boom configuration for improved reach and flexibility
- In-bucket operation for improved efficiency
- Bucket is insulated to 1000V for enhanced safety
- Automatic bucket levelling to keep the platform floor horizontal
- Boom rotation limiting system to prevent contact with the cab and cab protector.
- Auto homing function to return the truck to its starting position at the touch of a button
